about

While our previous album, The Twilight Fall, is not mandatory listening to understand the concept of this recording, it might help you gain an understanding of where we come from to start at what really is the beginning of the story. Before, we took you through the life cycle of you, and with Aftermath, we visit what happens after the end; in the orange skies and purple clouds of the temperate dreamworld a part of you inhabits.

I had the privilege of spending a few weeks at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and it is there that the majority of this recording crystallized. “Revolution Blues” had already been composed, inspired by the 2016 US presidential election, and this is where we begin: in a world so divided, we can't even begin to see each others' sides. A world where there is no middle ground. Aftermath is the story of conflict in all its forms: macro and micro, internal and interpersonal. It's an exploration of the things that we do to each other out of hurt, and the consequences of those actions.

Being an artist is so close, sometimes, to ripping your heart out of your chest and offering to the world. With every new song, every new listener, every new improvisation, you ask: can you hold this in your heart? Can you love it? Can you accept what I have to offer? Is this good enough?

The works found on this album were meant to be dark, and scary. Conflict is never an easy thing to explore. But I can't look at all the hurt that inspired this recording without remembering that even in the worst moments...somehow there is hope. People are inherently good. We may gravitate to the negative at times, but we could use a little more practice of love and gratitude. To remember that if we don't teach, no one learns, and if we don't open, no one loves.

Consider this, then, an invitation; to find silver linings in clouds, warmth in grey days, safe harbour in dark times. And a call to action, to be true to your word: to own your actions, and your commitment to a better place. No one person has all the answers, all things right, all things good. But you are much stronger when you're not alone.

This album is best heard under a purple sky with orange clouds, in a cabin on stilts overlooking a body of water, accented by the sound of rain on a rooftop or static on the radio and television.

Thank yous:

To my family; the first, the foremost, the constant. Thank you for letting me do this crazy thing I've been dreaming of - and for supporting me unconditionally the whole way, even when I say and do silly things.

To our crowdfunding contributors: Kristin Fung, Jim Mitchell, Apollo Lemmon, Chris Molyneaux, Art Mullin, Andre St-Denis, Karen Stolz, Christos Aslanidis, John Dupuis, Tomas Lohammar, Leisa Sieber, Emma Cava, Henry Gluch, Garrett Steele, Sang Jun Lim, Jesse Watts, Frank Rooney, and Thomas Preismeyer, and a couple of anonymous and generous benefactors.

To our public funders, the Toronto Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, FACTOR (and the Government of Canada) and the Ontario Arts Council.

To my teachers and mentors: I haven't stopped learning. Thank you for opening up a world of inspiration.

To my friends, colleagues, peers: thank you for driving me to be better, every single day.

To the fans: we don't get to do this without you. Thank you for all of your love and support in making this possible.

To the production and post-production crew on this album: thank you for helping fit all of the pieces together in a way that makes sense, and for adding your incredible talents to this story.

To Kevin: thank you for being the best producer I could ever ask for.

And last but not least, to the band: thank you for diving into this music with me, for dissecting it and distilling it and adding your voice to it and realizing this thing that i imagined. You are the life of these songs, and there will be more.

This album is the product of blood, sweat, and tears; of public funding; of luck; of a lot of emotions; of hours in the practice room; of hours staring at the mountains. If you feel something when you listen to this, we have done our job, because we made this by feeling things.

Thanks for listening.

Track Name: Revolution Blues
If you're looking for the revolution
Come on down
If you want to turn the heat up
Paint the town
If you don't want to start alone
Follow the crowd

Strike a match and pour the gasoline
Set your words ablaze and leave the scene
Practice all your alibis and names
If you start the riot, you might be famous

If you're looking for the revolution
Come on down
If you want to turn the heat up
Paint the town
If you don't want to start alone
Follow the crowd

If you want to change the world a little
Come on down
If you want to get the word out
Paint the town
If you want change that you can see
Lead the crowd
Track Name: Say You Love Me
You faded long ago
Into the background of the scene
Audible when speaking
But not saying what you mean

I've been building you a palace
Where the two of us could stay
But the ground is never stable
And the walls are giving way
You can pick up all the pieces
Or just choose to walk away
But when you leave
Say you love me

I echo through the hall
Like the chorus of a dream
Right beyond your memory
And never what I seem

We wander through the space
Commit to tired, aching lies
Going through the motions
When we should have said goodbye

In the remnants of a castle
You can find your broken heart
Take the pieces of your love
And set the shards of mine apart
I thought I'd be hurt forever
But I turned you into art
So when you see
Say you love me

In the remnants of a castle
You can find your broken heart
Take the pieces of your love
And set the shards of mine apart
I thought I'd be hurt forever
But I turned you into art
So when you see
Say you love me

Say you love me
Track Name: Ballad of the Arboghast
The stars were better off without us
The stars were better off without us
The stars were better off without us
The stars were better off without us
The stars were better off without us
The stars were better off without
Track Name: House On Fire
Mother Nature, what do you owe me?
I've been trying hard to set you free
I can take your dirt and make it gold
Turn your trees to goods that can be sold

If I sell for a profit
I can return this money to you
In the form of a long term loan
That's just gone overdue
Now that you are in our land
We have a duty to you
It's already decided
That this is what's best for you

If I sell for a profit
I can return this money to you
Donate it to your causes
And say it's worthless to you
You lose out if we don't succeed
You can't win if we do
But it's already decided
That this is what's best for you

House on fire won't be coming back
I sure thought we'd win in this attack
With the god of business on our side
You should thank us for the easy ride

If I sell for a profit
I can return this money to you
Donate it to your causes
And say it's worthless to you
You lose out if we don't succeed
You can't win if we do
But it's already decided
That this is what's best for you
Track Name: The Void Becomes You
Why, me, why now?

Underneath the tides
Breathing in the light
The void becomes you
The void welcomes you
Pay up all you owe
Buy your ticket home
And leave with what you sow
The void becomes you

Wrong place, wrong time
Why me now, why?

It chases all the time
Leaves no one behind
The void becomes you
The void welcomes you
Regardless of your life
You must return to night
Where all your love resides
The void becomes you

So close, so far
So close, so far
Wrong place, wrong time
Why me now, why?

When all the stars align
To turn you into light
The void becomes you
The void welcomes you
And somewhere in the space
They won't forget your face
Or anything you do
The void becomes you
The void becomes you
Becomes you
Becomes you
Track Name: Fly By Night
Oh, Mama, I cannot be alone with this
I'm making bad decisions with a kiss

If you get me out alive, I'll sell you what I bought and sold
Dreams of ordinary white and twenty karat gold

I'm not scared of my reflection in the mirror
But I act like hell on wheels
And I try to give myself a chance to spin it
But you don't know how this feels
Oh, the lightning strikes through every single synapse
And I know that I'm alive
But the crash is coming for me in a minute
And I just want another chance to live it
Shining in the light
Flying through the night

Oh, Papa, I cannot be alone with this
I'm making bad decisions with my fists

If you get me out alive, I'll tell you what you need to hear
I've been working on the cure so you don't need to fear

I'm not scared of my reflection in the mirror
But I act like hell on wheels
And if you want a ride then you can have it
Overwhelming what you feel
Oh, the lightning strikes through every single synapse
And I know that I'm alive

Shining in the light
I might be all right
Track Name: Niagara
At night, we begin
Counting sheep and tracing comets
Chasing sunrise and sleep
Building a life inside a dream
I reach for your hand
But I'm far too codependent now
To stand on my own

Oh, Niagara
Fall on me
Run to the distant sea
Roll over all of me
You taste ephemeral
I felt untouchable
Save for you
Save for you

We end at the start
Drawing circles with our fingers
Idle time, passing by
Taking with it our relief
I reach for your hand
But I'm far too codependent now
To breathe when alone

Oh, Niagara
Fall on me
Run to the distant sea
Roll over all of me
You taste ephemeral
I felt untouchable
Save for you
Save for you

If the sky is canvas, how is the air so cold?
If our world is ageless, why do we fear getting old?
If there is an after, why make us wait?
If this is the be all, then I want to end all
And find it, under the tide

Oh, Niagara
Fall for me
Wrap me in harmony
Float with the melody
Oh, with the chemical
I am untouchable
Save for you
Save for you
Track Name: Porcelain
Too outlandish in a dress
Too conservative in vests
Hard enough to play it cool
It ain't enough to say “me too”

I dressed to kill with looks that turn you into stone and
I don't make promises that don't return you home and
I won't tell your wife that you don't get it

I'm not made of porcelain so you can break me
I'm so much stronger than I look to be
I never wanted you this close to me
So instead of moving in, just let me be

Say too much to fill the air
Keep your eyes from drifting elsewhere
Didn't come here wanting trouble
So I'll be leaving on the double

I dressed to kill with looks that turn you into stone and
I promise all your indiscretions will be known and
I don't have to tell your wife that you don't get it

I'm not made of porcelain so you can break me
I'm so much stronger than I look to be
I never wanted you this close to me
So instead of moving in, just let me be

I don't pay rent in this world with lovers I have caught
I don't gain success by being something that I'm not
I deserve to have a peaceful drink
I don't care what it is you think you do
I'm not here for you

I'm not made of porcelain so you can break me
I keep on saying no 'til you believe me
I'm so much stronger than I look to be
So just take the opening and
Let me be
Track Name: Love Is On The Line
In a slow time, I loved you
With a fire like the distant sun
And I never thought to leave you
When the day was done

So as our lives pick up around us
And we rush through every day
All I want to know is: Will you stay?

As our paths ahead grow clearer
And we change along the way
All I want to know is
All I have to say

All my love is on the line
All my love is on the line
If your heart was only mine
All my love is on the line
All my love is on the line

On a high ride, you caught me
Just as sure as the moon will rise
And my doubts all deserted me
When I looked into your eyes

All my love is on the line
All my love is on the line
If your heart was only mine
All my love is on the line
All my love is on the line

All my love is on the line
All my love is on the line
Say your heart will just be mine
All my love is on the line
All my love is on the line
